For {You’re} Courage

For {You're} Courage
“I’ve been a fan of Nick Barrows, his work, and the way he reads it, for more than two decades. The best way I can describe it is to say that Nick Barrows is a real poet in every sense of the word, and a Nick Barrows poem sends a little shock of light into the darkness of this life. To read him on the page, or hear him through the forest, is to experience the world changing slightly for the better. Your hair might stand on end. Or you might suddenly feel nostalgic, or a little dread. You certainly will encounter much good humor—antlers on fire or sweet corn or Iceland. You might suddenly find yourself in punk rock heaven, hungrily awaiting the return of The McRib. What you need to know is this: Nick Barrows poems’ shadows have shadows, and there the valley we all walk though always is. You have to have love in your heart (you do, don’t you?) and you also have to be willing to go off the rails to get back up on them. Most importantly, however, you have to have courage. You have to go where Nick takes you—the words and the music in the very same breath.” —Matt Hart

He has been performing poetry for over twenty years, from Kaldi’s Coffee House to Word of Mouth at MOTR Pub. His self-published title Rockets on Bibles was released in 2007, and the co-authored Versus with Mark Flanigan was published by Aurore Press in 2012 (“a prodding of humanity and the human psyche that is sometimes dark, sometimes ethereal and sometimes humorous.” – CityBeat.) His musical escapades include Eagle To Squirrel, JetLab, Jack Burton Overdrive, and MacReady U.K. Nick views his works not as a form of instruction but more a cautionary tale.
